June 2009 Trip to Axum

E-mail Print PDF

Such a successful visit! This time, Karen & Harego were joined by Carolina Andersson and Sarah Johnstone, two teachers from DESS as well as Dr. George Lafontaine, a Canadian dentist. Carolina and Sarah were very successful in getting the water project rolling at the school. This undertaking, which is entirely funded by money raised at DESS, will see a water supply procured for the school as well as a toilet and shower block. The construction is now well underway. What a difference this will make in the daily lives of the children at the school. A big THANK YOU to all of the students, parents, and staff at DESS!

We also visited with all of our sponsored students, who are doing very well. Two of our students have achieved 100% marks on their exams and were chosen for special placement at a high school in the capital of the region, Mekele. The other students are all doing well in school and are so appreciative of the support Axum-Africa gives them each month. We really feel it is making a difference. We also interviewed 20 new needy children and have found sponsors for most of them. We still have seven students who are in need of sponsors. For only 100 Dhs per month you can make such a big difference in the lives of these children. If you are interested in sponsoring, please let us know by email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. On this trip, we also provided the boys at the orphanage with soccer shoes which were so generously donated by families in Dubai. As you can see on the faces of the boys, they were very well received!

We also donated 50 recorders which were donated by friends in Dubai. What would we do without the support of our great friends and community?!

Next trip is planned for February 2010...
