Axum Africa

There is so much that is needed in this community that it is hard to know where to begin. We will continue to focus on education as it is the only real hope for the future of these children. We will continue to ensure that each student of the school has adequate school supplies and uniform and we will endeavor to improve the school in other ways as well.

We wish to provide more equipment for the practical education of the students, such as woodworking and metal working machines as well as sewing machines. Knowing how to use this type of equipment will offer the students a real option for employment when they finish their studies. Knowing that this type of education is available at the school will encourage families to keep their children in school longer.

Library

All of the children of Axum wish to be educated. The availability of a good quality and well-stocked library facility will provide a valuable resource centre for all to use.

We hope to accomplish this goal in cooperation with the local Axum school board.

Classroom Furniture

None of the teachers at the school have a desk. As well, many of the classrooms do not have tables or benches for the students (the students sit on rocks or small stools). We are planning on outfitting every classroom with sufficient tables and chairs for the children, as well as tables and cabinets for the teachers.

This is a project which we would undertake in Axum. Ideally, the students of the school would produce their own furniture with woodworking and metalworking equipment which would be paid for with project funds.

Fresh Water Supply

A reliable supply of fresh water is crucial to the health and welfare of the sudents of the school. At present the supply to the school is minimal and sporadic. We would like to ensure a reliable source, either by having a well drilled, or by procuring a dedicated water line from the town supply, complete with the necessary pumps and tanks.

We are currently researcing our options in this matter.
